Skill Level: Accomplished beginner in the basics of chain, slip stitch, double crochet and treble crochet.

You Will Need:

Abbreviations (UK Terminology):

  • adjustable slip knot = magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • ss = slip stitch
  • dc = double crochet
  • 2dcinc = 2dc in next stitch
  • tr = treble crochet

Crochet Water Bottle Holder Pattern:

Make an adjustable slip knot and ch3 (counts as 1tr)

Rnd 1: 8dc into first ch

Rnd 2: 2dc in every stitch around (16dc)

Rnd 3: (1dc, 2dcinc) repeat around (24dc)

Rnd 4: (2dc, 2dcinc) repeat around (32dc)

Rnd 5: (3dc, 2dcinc) repeat around (40dc)

Rnd 6: (9dc, 2dcinc) repeat around (44dc)

Rnd 7-12: dc around

As there are no increases in these rounds, it will cause your work to curl up at the edge. This is intentional to start to create the cylindrical body of the cover.

Rnd 13: (3ch, miss 2dc, 1dc in next dc) repeat around to last 2dc, then 3ch, miss last 2dc, ss into first 3ch space to complete this round.

Rnd 14: 3ch (acts as 1tr), 5tr in same 3ch space, (1dc in next 3ch space, 3ch, 1dc in next 3ch space, 6tr in next 3ch space) repeat around. Ss into 3rd ch of beginning 3ch of the round to join.

Rnd 15: Ss into next tr stitch, 4ch (acts as 1dc and 3ch), miss 2tr, 1dc in next tr (3ch, 1dc in next 3ch space, 3ch, 1dc in 2nd tr stitch, 3ch, miss 2tr, 1dc in next tr) repeat twice more. 3ch, 1dc in 3ch space, 3ch, ss into first ch of beginning 4ch to join.

Rnd 16: Ss into 3ch space, 3ch (acts as 1tr), 5tr in same 3ch space, (1dc in next 3ch space, 3ch, 1dc in next 3ch space, 6tr in next 3ch space) repeat around. Ss into 3rd ch of beginning 3ch of the round to join.

Repeat Rnds 15 and 16 five times more.

Rnd 28-29: dc around

Row 30: Working in short rows from this point to create handle. 6dc, turn

Row 31-36: dc across, if you prefer, make 1 turning ch at the beginning of each round. I don’t, I just loosen the first stitch ever so slightly as I find this keeps the edge straighter for me.

Row 37-118: 3ch (acts as 1tr), 1tr in each st across. Make sure you use the 3ch as a tr stitch, picking up 2 loops so you don’t end up with holes, otherwise you may end up with less stitches than you started with.

Alternatively, work as many rows as is needed for the handle to fit your body bearing in mind you may need to deduct a few centimetres or a couple of inches as it will stretch when the water bottle is in place, plus you still have 6 more rows to complete.

Rows 119-124: 1dc in each stitch across.

Fasten off handle leaving a tail of yarn for sewing. Fold the bottle holder in half with the handle in the middle so you can match where to sew the end of the handle to the other side.

Sew handle using 2 rows of over stitching to make the join strong and secure. Sew in all ends.
